Huit ans après leur dernier album "Rapture of the Deep", Deep Purple a décider d'enregistrer un nouvel album. Au cours de ces huit années, Deep Purple a donné de nombreux concerts et a beaucoup tourné.
Ian Gillan a déclaré sur "Now What?!" : "Ca n'aurait pas été le bon moment il y a deux ans, ça n'aurait pas été le bon moment il y a 5 ans. Le bon moment, c'est MAINTENANT. On s'est dit qu'il était temps de sortir quelque chose de nouveau et c'est ce que nous avons fait. "Now What?!" est l'un des enregistrements les plus importants auxquels j'ai participé."
