Tankard a été fondé en 1982 et est un groupe allemand de thrash metal originaire de Francfort-sur-le-Main. Aux côtés de Kreator, Destruction et Sodom, ils sont considérés comme faisant partie des "Quatre Grands" du thrash metal allemand. Stylistiquement à l'aise dans le thrash metal, leurs chansons se concentrent principalement sur l'alcool. Ils ont sorti leur premier album, "Zombie Attack", en juillet 1986. Un an plus tard, en octobre 1987, leur deuxième album "Chemical Invasion" a suivi, puis en 1988 "The Morning After". Après le départ de leur premier batteur, Oliver Werner, remplacé par Arnulf Tunn, le groupe a sorti trois albums : "The Meaning of Life", "Stone Cold Sober" et "Two-Faced". Parallèlement, Tankard a sorti l'album live "Fat, Ugly and Live". La composition du groupe a de nouveau changé par la suite. En mai 1994, Arnulf Tunn a été remplacé par Olaf Zissel, qui joue encore de la batterie à ce jour. Un an plus tard, un autre membre fondateur, Axel Katzmann, a été contraint de quitter le groupe en raison d'une arthrite au poignet. La même année, le groupe a sorti "The Tankard", qui était leur dernier album avec Noise. Aujourd'hui, le groupe célèbre son 40e anniversaire, en jouant des concerts dans le monde entier, en enregistrant et en sortant de nouvelles musiques.
