Trivium est un groupe aux multiples visages, qui sait combiner des éléments de heavy metal, de metalcore et de thrash metal comme aucun autre. Pour un groupe qui tend dans tant de directions différentes, il est particulièrement remarquable de pouvoir revenir sur plus de 20 ans d’histoire du groupe.
De la compétition de talents aux talents exceptionnels
Contrairement à d’autres histoires de groupe, celle de Trivium ne commence pas dans une salle de répétition d’arrière-cour, mais dans un concours de talents de la classe moyenne : les membres fondateurs de Trivium, Brad Lewter, Brent Young, Matthew Heafy et Travis Smith, se sont rencontrés pour la première fois à l’école secondaire de Lake Brantley en 1999. Après que le quatuor ait réussi à obtenir quelques concerts lors de fêtes, le chanteur Brad Lewter a décidé de quitter le groupe et Heafy a repris le rôle de chanteur principal.
D’ailleurs, le nom du groupe vient du latin : Trivium est un terme qui décrit les trois matières linguistiques des sept arts libéraux. Il s’agit notamment de la grammaire, du dialecte et de la rhétorique. Le groupe a choisi ce nom parce qu’il représente l’ouverture et les styles différents, ce qui souligne l’esthétique musicale des Américains. En 2003, le moment était venu et le groupe a fait ses premiers enregistrements de démo de haute qualité.
Grâce à cela, la maison de disques Lifeforce a pris connaissance du groupe, qui a immédiatement offert un contrat à Trivium et a envoyé les gars au studio d’enregistrement pour enregistrer « Ember to Inferno » (2003). Le premier album a reçu presque exclusivement des critiques positives, de sorte qu’un nouveau disque ne s’est pas fait attendre. Avec Roadrunner Records, Trivium a sorti « Ascendancy » en mars 2005. Peu de temps après, Trivium est retourné en studio pour enregistrer « The Crusade » (2006).
L’album se caractérise avant tout par le style vocal plus doux de Heafy, qui n’a pas vraiment déclenché l’enthousiasme des fans du groupe. Alors que Heafy s’était concentré sur les grognements et les cris sur les albums précédents, il y a aussi beaucoup de voix claires à entendre dans « The Crusade ».
Le groupe a pris les critiques à cœur et est revenu à son style thrash en 2008 avec « Shogun ». À l’été 2011, les fans pouvaient s’attendre à un autre album de Trivium, « In Waves », avec lequel le groupe a clairement montré qu’il s’était développé en termes d’écriture de chansons et qu’il n’avait pas peur des morceaux plus complexes. Trivium a également fait preuve de sophistication en termes de composition et de paroles avec son chef-d’œuvre de 2013 « Vengeance Falls », qui a même atteint des classements aux États-Unis, au Royaume-Uni, au Japon et dans divers pays européens.
Il a été suivi de deux autres albums, « Silence in the Snow » (2015) et « The Sin and the Sentence » (2017), avec lesquels Trivium s’est imposé sur la scène musicale internationale. Malgré quelques changements de membres au fil des ans et diverses phases expérimentales, Trivium est resté fidèle à son style et a créé non seulement des albums entraînants, mais aussi une base de fans fidèles.
« Ce que disent les morts »
Après trois ans, il y a enfin de nouvelles chansons de Trivium à nouveau dans vos oreilles ! La nouvelle œuvre s’intitule : « Ce que disent les morts ». Selon le chanteur Matthew Heafy, l’album incarne tout ce que Trivium représente. Pour lui, l’album combine le son Trivium du futur, présent et passé. Un petit avant-goût de l’album était déjà donné par le single « Catastrophist ». Des passages de guitare accrocheurs, un rythme puissant et un refrain émotionnel donnent à la chanson de près de sept minutes une atmosphère dramatique qui vous donne envie de plus.
